Ashley Wagner's B-Bomb

American figure skater Ashley Wagner was, shall we say, not impressed with her score and she let the world know how she felt about it immediately--with a reactive face and a well-enunciated declaration of "Bullshit!" The world, in kind, quickly let her know how they felt about her reaction, by turning it into a meme.

Bob Costas has pinkeye

There's just something in the air in Sochi. And whatever it is may or may not have given famed commentator Bob Costas pinkeye. Although Costas is currently sitting out his on-air duties, Internet jokers certainly haven't sat out the opportunity to compare him to the final scene in Total Recall and many other folks with eye-malfunctions.

When American bobsledder Johnny Quinn discovered he was locked inside a public bathroom in Sochi in the middle of the night, he used all his Olympic might to burst through the door like the Kool-Aid Man and break free. His subsequent tweet about the incident quickly went viral, becoming another symbol of how things weren't going 100% smoothly at this Olympics.

The One False Ring

As mentioned before, when the actual symbol for the Olympics has a malfunction, that doesn't bode well for the event itself. The faulty ring in the opening ceremony proved to be a rich vein for semesters.

Pairs Skaters Minus Men

When you remove one half of the equation--the male half--the pairs figure skaters look less like they're performing a routine than they appear to be fighting against gravity as though it were a hated nemesis, as BuzzFeed pointed out.

The Shoshi Games

Zosia Mamet's Shoshanna is one of the four central female leads on HBO's Girls. She is also one of the least likely folks to end up anywhere near the Olympics, which is why a blog made of images that place Shosh in Sochi hits the right note. After a tweet from Girls creator Lena Dunham endorsed it, the Tumblr made the rounds on the Internet.

Evgeni Plushenko Wants You To Ride The Pony

Do you know who's got moves? Evgeni Plushenko has moves. The four-time gold medal-winning Russian figure skater showed them off in competition early in the WInter games with a sexy routine that reminded some of a certain Channing Tatum stripper movie. As such, the Internet quickly responded by scoring Plushenko's routine with the song "Pony" by Ginuwine, which was prominently featured in Magic Mike.

Star Wars AT-ATs Attack Olympians

Sochi has a lot of snow and so does the ice planet Hoth. It just makes sense to mash the two up together, which is just what the graphics department of a Danish TV show, Natholdet, did--jamming together skiing footage from the Winter Olympic Games with AT-AT walkers from The Empire Strikes Back. Early reports indicate that Star Wars fans are pleased as punch.

The Farting Olympics

Childish as it may be, who's to say that the execution of the fart-y noises inserted into various Olympic sports isn't as beautiful as that of the athletes themselves?

Relive The Sochi Winter Olympics Via These Gold Medal Memes

The Winter Olympic Games are only halfway over, and already there is enough participatory joke fodder to keep Internet pranksters busy until Summer '16.

Merely watching live events on television these days is so passé. The thing to do instead is watching on two levels—one that absorbs the content and processes it, and the other mining this content for anything funny or interesting to comment about on a second screen. Some people go much further than mere commenting, though, which is way award ceremonies like the Oscars, and even political events like presidential debates and national conventions tend to produce memes. While those events are fairly short-lived, though, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi lasts for two long weeks.

Even before the Olympics got underway, #SochiProblems had become a meme—with reporters detailing all manner of faulty accommodations across the small Russian city. However, this bit of bad press proved to be mere warm up for what was to come. There is perhaps no better metaphor for an Olympics not quite running smoothly than for one of the Olympic rings to not open during the pyrotechnical portion of the opening ceremony. A tone was set.

The Winter Olympics are only halfway over, and already they seem to have inspired enough participatory joke fodder to keep Internet pranksters busy until Summer 2016. Have a look at the best ones so far in the slides above.
