Can You Spot What's Different In The 2013 Pirelli Calendar?

After years of "tasteful" nudity, the famously rare calendar shakes things up with a more modest, socially conscious affair—and a visibly pregnant Adriana Lima.

The Pirelli calendar is famous for a few things. It is populated by the world’s most unapproachably gorgeous women, unencumbered by clothing, and its distribution is so limited that, statistically, you have probably never seen one in person. While the calendar usually serves as an artful showcase of the highest-end T&A, in this year’s edition, it’s the bared flesh that’s more elusive than usual.

2013

Under photographer Stephen McCurry, the 2013 calendar features all fully clothed models set against the backdrop of Brazil. Breaking even further from tradition, some of this year’s models were chosen as much for social good deeds as their looks. The Brazilian actress Sonia Braga makes an appearance, even though she is in her early 60s, and Adriana Lima has the distinction of being the first-ever visibly pregnant Pirelli Calendar model.

Have a look through the images in this year’s calendar above (compared with some of the NSFW 2012 shots, which you’ll notice toward the end), and watch a behind-the-scenes video of the shoot below. Do you prefer the 2013 images? Sound off in the comments.

My initial reaction and the reactions of those I showed (without context, just 'look at this collection of images') was " ...and?"  It's a hotch potch collection of unrelated and awkward looking images.  As soon as I mentioned it was the Pirelli Calendar those in the know leaned in closer and took more interest - the kings new clothes style.

An evocatively dressed woman has an allure a nude can never replace, a nude is a study that takes great skill to do well, a person in a setting is a juxtaposition of form and space, either a contradiction or a study in context.  These fail to evoke anything other than to ride the name of Pirelli

It is just what I'd expect when a national geographic photographer gets woven into fashion/glamour portraiture - there a story is woven in. The photos are cinematic and dynamic in emotion. As much as I appreciate the art and beauty of past pirelli calendars, this one is actually interesting to look at more than simply pretty to look at.

well done pirelli. the use of models as a door to reality rather than superficiality is to be praised.

Turning something edgy into something worthy seems a bit pretentious to me.

Still portraying females without a menstrual bleed in their reality, but it is some progress in noticing that women are biologically different from men. Well done boyz!!

Frankly the nude shots are as stupid as most nude shots are. Love the life in the Brazilian shots, real, beautiful and like they can actually breathe

So the calendar is celebrating the diversity of women as sexual objects - even a pregnant woman looks ready for sex?  It's a sad twist on progress

  • Hana

How does she look ready for sex? She is wearing clothes, and looking down at the floor lol... This calendar has a range of emotions, if you see that a sexual objectification you are blind or simply an idiot.

    Not including pregnant women?
We hate how women look when they're pregnant.Including one? We're turning them into sex objects.
